A year on from the Samarco environmental disaster in Mariana, which contaminated the Doce River basin in Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo with iron waste and affected over two million people, this action proposes a day of talks and pedagogy for the #32bienal public program. The debate will address a range of issues surrounding the current mining and energy-generation model, including the privatisation of bio-cultural ecosystems, the high rates charged by energy distributors, and the water crisis in São Paulo, as well as the impunity that has followed the environmental crime that caused the 2015 disaster. A geochoreography, or collective action, will close the day’s events with a message and vivid image that articulates experiences, territories and struggles: attendees will be invited to help body-write the words ‘Águas para a vida' [Waters for Life] and photos of this physical protest will be freely shared on a range of platforms.
