A sound path that addresses content relevant to INCERTEZA VIVA and leads the listener to the works installed outside the Bienal Pavilion. The walk starts at the gate 3 of the Ibirapuera Park and takes the visitor to the main entrance of the 32nd Bienal. This is a proposal created and narrated by the 32nd Bienal team.

Abandonaremos aqui a proteção do centro.

- Yasmil Raymond

[Siga a direita e atravesse a rua]

As palavras?
Eduardo Navarro

[Houve um deslocamento]

[Ande em direção à placa colorida. Pare aqui]

"compreender é se apropriar
do tempo
de outrem"

"o silêncio e,
sendo muitos,
chegavam a se emendarem
uns aos outros como se não
tivessem mais assunto"
Wlademir Dias-Pino

Rachel Rose

Estamos no meio.

English Version

This is a poetic exercise proposed by a group of people involved in the processes leading up to the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo. We hope that you are able to come into contact with a new idea of time on this walk. The suggested itinerary is on the map and the footsteps you hear mark the pace of movement along it. Don’t worry whether you’re in the right place or not. It is ok to get lost.

Here we will abandon the protection of the center. Give in to the loss of your sense of structure. Getting lost is a dangerous form of finding oneself. To err is to turn and to return, to allow oneself the magic of straying off. Errant is what we call those who wander without a destination.

[Let’s go, follow the sound of the footsteps. Once you go through this doorway, there is a colored outdoor. We’re going to walk toward it]

This region of the city of São Paulo is called “Ibirapuera” or “ybi-ra-ouêra.” Some say that in Tupi this name means moist wood or rotten tree. Ybirá is tree, puera is “what once was.” As such, Ibirapuera would be “that which was once wood” or “where there was once a tree.”

[Walk off the asphalt, and continue straight ahead through the grass]

Still others say that ybirá means “fence for enemies,” with Ibirapuera meaning “where there was a fenced-in village.”

[Stop here.]

Throughout our path, you will see two more of these outdoors, from the poet Wlademir-Dias Pino. The poem has been transformed. Whenever you see one of these outdoors, stop in front of it and listen…

"Man
with his exasperated steps
taking care to go parallel
to his equality" - Wlademir Dias-Pino

[Keep walking toward the tree with the red flowers]

The name here pays homage to the original charatceristics of this wetland and the two Tupiniquim villages called “Ibirapuera.” These villages were not here, but were located on the banks of the Pinheiros River. The fact is that the Ibirapueras had a short lifespan as villages after the arrival of the Europeans.

[Stop here]

In front of you is a Mulungu tree, this red plant. Originally found along the banks of the Tietê River, it is also known as amansa-senhor (gentleman tamer) or bico-de-papagaio (parrot beak). Its red-colored flowers have anti-depressant effects. It is one of the few native trees found in this park. Before, there was only mud, then eucalypti and, after that, a multiplicity of exotic species was brought in to be tested. There was a quilombo leader from the state of Sergipe named João Mulungu. He was known as the Sergipean Zumbi. Mulungu resisted against slavery to fight for the Black cause, just as the Mulungu tree resists.

[Go towards the skateboard rink]

This park opened in August 1954, in commemoration of the four hundredth anniversary of the founding of the city of São Paulo, with the objective of bringing together nature and culture. But when had they separated? A city 400 years old… can you imagine the age of the land? The park was built on this land. Empty land? Can land be owned? This place was not empty, but neither did it have an owner. In 1952, 204 families lived in shanties throughout the area of Ibirapuera park. Where did they go?

[There has been a displacement]

Just like the soils, peoples, families and plants that have lived and passed through here, other tribes now come to this park. There are invisible walls, limits and demarcations that a first glance does not always reach, but sometimes does. Apophenia is an event that only occurs in humans – we find (or invent) patterns and meanings through random information.

“The dynamics of singularities always results from a small miracle, encounters that may trigger transformations that are no longer singular since they can upset the entire planet.” - Felix Guattari

[Stop here. Watch the movement, or the lack thereof]

As the afternoon wears on, the skateboard rink gradually changes color. As the night takes the place of the day, skaters come out along the marquise, gliding on their skates straight into this spherical court. Glidings. In the 1960s, skateboarding was called “Surfinho” - “little surfing” or “land surfing.” They would glide over solid waves, the sea turning into cement, the desert into sea.

[There has been a displacement]

"Revelations seems almost to require that we take the point of view of a crawling insect or an inquisitive dog: such creatures, in their determination to understand their surroundings, bring themselves up close to unknown and mysterious surfaces or stare with sharp attention from a distance, looking for a subtle movement that confirms a presence". - Yasmil Raymond

[Continue to the right and cross the street]

What is seen is always but a fraction; there is landscape beyond where one sees. This park is 1,584,000 square meters in size, a vast parcel of land. I see someone exercising now: it’s me, you, her and 200,000 other people who pass through here every week. The Earth rotates while the moon moves 3.8 cm farther from it in 365 days. Theory states that it is expanding crazily fast and then will reach its limit and begin shrinking up once more until it is smaller than an atom and explode again. The difference is that the time of the human body, mental health and civilization is much shorter. Turn your head upwards and look. There’s a listening device listening to a palm tree in a sort of cordless phone.

[Stop here]

- Hello, where are you calling from?
- From where there exist no words.
- Here on this side nothing exists without words.
- And what are they? I mean words?
- They’re magic, sacred. They transform living beings into something they are not.
Eduardo Navarro

[There has been a displacement]

[Walk toward the colored outdoor. Stop here]

"understanding is appropriating
someone else’s
time"

"silence and,
as there were many,
they went so far as to join
one another as if they did not
have anything else to say"
Wlademir Dias-Pino

[Continue to the left]

Look down and notice the universe under your feet. Silent ants. In recent years, the tectonic plates of human thought have shifted, busily breaking down established patterns of thinking. New scientific procedures have revealed that Myxomycetes, a kind of fungus, are neither properly Plant nor Animal. That discovery demonstrates the practical limitations of long agreed axioms of knowing.

“What once appeared as a firm, scientific reality - a concrete truth about the natural world - has been demonstrated to be simply a system of thinking about the world, a way of dividing it into a simple binary code, a left and right.” - Rikke Luther

[Continue toward the Bienal pavilion]

One day this building will be in ruins. Entropy is backwards evolution. There are certain things we need to hear from very far away in order to understand what is very close to us.

“That which will at this moment be revealed to the peoples of the world will surprise everyone not because it is exotic, but because it has always been able to be hidden when it could have been obvious.” - Caetano Veloso

[We’re now under the Bienal marquise and are going to go around the building on the left]

“So wonderful!
It was a perfect weather a minute ago!
So quickly changed
This is hail!
Oh shit!
If we die - Know that I love you.”
Rachel Rose

On May 10, 1969, Hélio Oiticica wrote the text ‘As possibilidades do Crelazer’ (‘The possibilities of Beleisure’). “To believe in leisure, how silly, I don’t believe in anything, I just live… I prefer the salad of life, the rubbing of bodies. I want my love!” - Hélio Oiticica

[Stop for a moment here in front of the entryway steps. This line divides the park. On one side are all of the museums and monuments, and on the other are all of the gardens and herbaria. We are in the middle. We’re not going to enter the exhibition yet. Don’t worry, trust that the right time will come. Continue to the right]

Potlach “...consumption by fire: there is a gift of the gods that has to be returned until there is nothing else to give. It is a dance of throwing away property, a form of communication between people who hold nothing back – an economy of emotion and play. Potlatch is just a metaphor by means of understanding the way the small becomes huge.” - Mariana Castillo Deball

[Stop here]

In front of you is a Valley, Allicia Valley, in honor of the valley near the city of Jamundí in Colombia. There are hundreds of mushrooms and the blowing of the wind. Go in. Listen. “I felt his/its/your calling as though they were magic. This intimate relationship with the object was also present in my hyper acute sense of the impossibility of real communication between humans.” - Alicia Barney

[Walk toward the last colored outdoor]

“Hello, Keeper of herds, there beside the road, what does the wind blowing by tell you? Which is wind, and that blows by, And which had blown by before, And which will blow by again…” - Alberto Caeiro. This is why the wind speaks only of wind.

[Stop in front of the outdoor]

"they saddle up their eyes and
like blood donors
level off and sleep
at the foot of mushrooms
(leaving behind their shadows)
at right angles smeared
over their lilac pillows
soft like the touch (invisible hair)
and the cloud that descends forms a cage
of toppled manikins"
Wlademir Dias-Pino

[Now walk over to those trees to the right, in front of the pavilion]

Look at these trees. Look at them hard. There are two, a palm tree and a red-fig tree. It is an epiphyte. Native to Brazil, epiphytes behave like strangling figs but live in union on other plants, being supported by them without taking nutrients from them. The red-fig tree does not kill the palm tree, it hugs it. This practice allows the plants to cooperate in a circular manner for light, air and space, prospering even without soil.

“We do not exist alone. Or rather, there is no alone that exists.” - Jean Luc-Nancy

As Déborah Danowski and Eduardo Viveiros de Castro said, “We are, in summary, ready to enter – or we already have, and this uncertainty itself illustrates the experience of temporal chaos – in an Earth System regime entirely different from everything we know.”
